Hiring Wisdom: Before You Fire, Consider

The Restaurant Doctor, Bill Marvin, suggests we explore the reasons we may think we need to fire someone because, in many cases, we could get to the root of the problem and correct it instead. I found the list quite interesting and even took it a step further.

Below is Bill’s list and my comments (in italics). If you think any of the following are reasons to fire someone, perhaps you should think again.

They don’t understand what you want. (Lack of training and clear communication.)
They don’t understand why it is important. (Lack of training and clear communication.)
They don’t understand how to do it. (Lack of training and clear communication.)
They think it doesn’t really have to be done. (Poor system, lack of communication and respect for them. Why do they feel it does not need to be done?)
It is beyond their abilities. (Bad hire or bad promotion.)
They don’t want to do it. (Lack of communication during the hiring process. Job duties not clearly spelled out.)
