ERE Chicago, Day 2: College Recruiting — It’s All About the Interns

ERE Chicago, Day 1: Looking For Answers — and Some Good Questions

ere-falllogo-facebookTuesday morning, at the opening keynote session of the Fall 2013 ERE Recruiting Conference & Expo in Chicago, kickoff speaker Ravin Jesuthasan, managing director and global practice leader at Towers Watson, offered this piece of wisdom: “You don’t need to have the answers, you just need to ask good questions.”

It’s great advice, of course, and it was just part of Jersuthasan’s opening address on What the Coming Years Will Bring to Recruiting Leaders — and How You Can Respond, which took the results of Talent 2021, a research study conducted jointly by Towers Watson and Oxford Economics, that examines the future of the global workforce.

The research found — and this isn’t a big surprise — that it will look very different from what it looks like today.

But the value of the study isn’t that it says that the global workforce will be different eight years from now, but rather, the map it laid out of where recruiting and talent management is going and what we all need to do as we follow the path to get there. keep reading…

ERE Conference’s Final Day: Yes, the Robots Are Coming to a Workplace Near You

Fast forward about 45 years, and now the discussion is about the huge changes coming to the workplace because of another trendy and cutting edge concept — robotics.

Attorney Garry Mathiason, chairman of the board of mega law firm Littler Mendelson, kicked off Day 2 of the Spring 2013 ERE Recruiting Conference & Expo in San Diego talking about Advanced Workplace Robots and Implications for Recruitment Strategies. While I admit that the title doesn’t sound like something you want to sit though early in the morning on the last day of a conference, Mathiason quickly said a few things that really got my attention.

Here’s one: “By 2025, robots will have taken over half of the jobs in the U.S.”

From the ERE Conference’s First Day: Are Recruiters Ready to Be Masters of the Universe?

No one ever said that recruiting was simple, or easy, and if you were listening Tuesday on Day 1 of the Spring 2013 ERE Recruiting Conference & Expo in San Diego, you know that there is an overwhelming desire for how to do it better in today’s rapidly changing, post-recession workplace.

Ron Mester, the president and CEO of ERE Media kicked off the two-day event by observing that recruiting seems to be at a precipice and is viewed by recruiters and other talent managers in one of two very different ways:

  • The Golden Age of recruiting is over We’re not at the strategy table and technology is taking over. Call this the “Wile E. Coyote Group,” or the people who are always worried that the anvil is about to fall on their head. Or,
  • This is the time for recruiting to break out and soar — Executives finally seem to understand how important talent really is, and we are all about to become “Masters of the Universe.

More Consolidation in the HR Space: Kenexa Deals for

HR software maker Kenexa will have a lot to talk about at its annual Kenexa World Conference later this month in Philadelphia.

That’s because Kenexa announced today that it has agreed to acquire compensation specialist in an all cash offer for $80 million, or $4.07 per share.

According to a press release from Kenexa, “The agreement has been unanimously approved by the board of directors of both companies, and’s board intends to recommend that the stockholders tender their shares in the offer.”, based in Massachusetts, makes software that helps businesses and individuals manage pay and performance, and, is very well-known in the HR space. Kenexa says that it expects to close the transaction for in the fourth quarter of 2010. keep reading…

What HR Can Learn From American Idol

I’m not a big fan of American Idol, but like a lot of people, I get sucked into the competitive aspects of taking a group of talented people and publicly narrowing it down until you have a single “winner.”

This got me to thinking: what can we take away from this kind of competition? Have we learned anything after nine seasons of watching a singing champion chosen this way?

Well yes, there are some pretty big lessons we can take away from American Idol — especially if you’re in human resources.

At its core, American Idol is all about finding and promoting the very best talent — something that HR leaders do for their organizations every single day. But, how the show ultimately goes about finding and promoting the best talent leaves a lot to be desired, and it raises some issues that every HR person should think about in their own talent development process.
