What’s the opposite of a dreadfully boring recruiting video, featuring employees or the CEO talking in corporate-speak about your workplace, your team environment, your diversity, your work-life balance, and your blah blah blah blah blah? Perhaps it’s the video below.

It’s promoting jobs at Aldebaran Robotics, a company that says it wants engineers who are “the most creative and experienced” … different, humble, and ambitious … if on top of that you are a funny geek, come join us!”

Best Lines

They’ve been having waaayy too much fun over on Quora coming up with great recruiting lines. This thing, this monster that’s grown to something like three dozens answers, started with this: “What are the greatest recruiting lines ever?”

The Steve Jobs line to Job Sculley — “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?” — got things rolling. Winston Churchill’s “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat,” made the list and got 23 votes.

The most popular, with 445 votes, was this one posted by an MIT student:

Eric Schmidt to Sheryl Sandberg on joining Google:

“Don’t be an idiot. Get on a rocket ship. When companies are growing quickly and they are having a lot of impact, careers take care of themselves. And when companies aren’t growing quickly or their missions don’t matter as much, that’s when stagnation and politics come in. If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. Just get on.”

Back in the last century, when we were young and planning on changing the world, those motivational lines would have closed us. Now, the one that appeals to us is from Boiler Room: “Become an employee of this firm, you will make your first million within three years.”
