America’s neighbor to the north has a new job search overlord.
Announced today, Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. will acquire the website and assets of Canadian job site Workopolis.com through its subsidiary, Indeed. Workopolis will become part of Indeed’s publisher network, which is basically what happened after Indeed gobbled up Simply Hired.
“Interesting move that basically gives them a monopoly on Canada,” said a former Indeed employee who talked to me on the condition of anonymity.
Workopolis has been around since 2000. The job board is synonymous with Canada, and it has been considered a major player in the country since its founding. A 2015 report by SimilarWeb ranked Workopolis third in job board traffic, just behind Indeed.ca and JobBank.gc.ca, the government’s job site. Monster.ca lands in the fourth spot.
“Workopolis is a trusted brand and leading Canadian job site for both job seekers and employers,” said Hisayuki Idekoba (known as “Deko”), COO of Recruit and CEO of Indeed. “With millions of loyal users that rely on the site, this acquisition allows us to expand our commitment to providing Canadian job seekers with a superior job search experience.”
The transaction is expected to close in April.
