After I attended the Monster Customer Executive Forum in late May, I posted about Monster's plans to cut back on the work-from-home scams and interstitial ads that plague their site. Since attending, I had heard nothing about the plans and was begininning to doubt that the new team at Monster had the resolve to go to their investors and tell them that they would be cutting off these sources of revenue for the sake of the larger business.
On today's conference call (Joel put the relevant audio on his blog), Monster CEO Sal Iannuzzi made the official anouncement of the changes, which are long overdue and a welcome change from the short-term outlook that made Monster accept these ads in the first place.
On the negative side, Monster also announced 800 layoffs, or 15% of their total headcount, which has to be linked to their slowing growth rate.
Even though the Q2(2007) figures show a revenue growth of 20% although much lesser than 38% of Q3(2006)Monster has laid off 800 employees i.e.15 % of total workforce.I find it hard to digest.
Lay offs affect all aspects of a person's life.It affects them and their families not only psychologically but in totality.New job has to found, may be children's education suffers etc, etc, etc.
At the slightest warning of impending negative Quarterly result or in case of M & A's the only answer the global business leaders have is restructuring or in other words lay offs.
This ought to be a burning issue.
For every hire lots of efforts go in by many people.Everything goes down the drain when these happen.
Do talented people not get laid off. What else would they do other than post resumes at job boards or apply etc.Yet most of us are obsessed with finding 'passive' talent only and avoid using job boards.
It is only of late that I have been reading articles of ERE and do not find larger issues being written about at all.Yes, I learn a lot from these without doubt. But I fail to see 'visionary' articles although many authors make 'tall claims' about themselves.
Also there are only a few participants in the such discussions,if any.
There is lot of talk about 'retention'.May I ask where is the commitment on part of the companies.
Are the non-compete agreements not too harsh?
Is the recourse to law not too expensive and beyond the capacity of employees being discriminated etc?
Most comapnies go into expansion without proper application of mind and cannot sustain it and then lay offs follow.
There are a host of other issues, yet no one talks about these.
For sure, remaining ignorant has it's own virtues.Especially bothering the 'conscience' is avoided. It doesn't matter as long as something happens elsewhere.
I fail to understand why everyone chooses to remain quiet.I doubt if there will be many respnses to this post or to my question.
David, may I request you to give your frank views and also would you invite authors to wtite about this 'cancer' by the leaders of all industries affecting the lives of millions.
Thank you and forgive me for speaking out my mind.
