Is it just me or has the IT world turned into a Microsoft development shop churning out C# code. Oddly enough, no one is jumping on the Vista operating system like they are on .NET development tools. It appears that Microsoft updates Visual Studio every 3 years and adds an all new framework and other tools. But it only updates the operating system every 6 years. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see more Apple OS in homes in the coming years. Microsoft's Exchange 2007 is new but not really. They just updated their new anti-virus software along with some messaging tools.
The good news is for those in development will see a lot of demand for the new tools from Microsoft, but same old news for folks that are in infrastructure and desktop support. But in the office there will be a lot of demand for Microsoft developers. As I write this, I need about 7 .NET developers proficient in C# for contract and perm opportunities.

Easier to release dev tools then OS

Michael I've seen the same trend, Microsoft realized a couple years back that the OS is less revelant then the framwork given the internet and waive of interopperabilty. They changed there focus to catchup to Java and with .net made leaps and bounds by tailoring the framework towards ease of use and increasing the developer pool a strategy that worked brilliantly.
As for OS updates Ballmer said we can never take this long again to release a new OS. Vista true strength is backwards compatibility, people don't really need Vista yet but once you switch its hard to go back. New software releases in February including SQL Server 2008/ Windows Server 2008 will help speed migrations.

What is amazing is that .NET has more developers nodding their head over Java. My company is split between Java and .NET dev projects, but I see that .NET has gained a lot of ground over Java projects lately.
