Arbita and JobMachine Join Forces

posted by
Shally Steckerl (1968)

ERE scooped the story before we had time to send out the press release! Big news, my gentle readers, JobMachine and Arbita are merging.

Late in the end of the 20th century I arrived at the conclusion that sourcing was more than merely a way for me to meet my recruitment goals by finding talent unavailable in mainstream sources, it was to be my chosen career.

When I started at this Sourcing hardly existed as a function, much less a dedicated role. Back them many though it was impossible to build a successful career entirely upon sourcing. I recognized early on I wanted to leave a professional mark in this world by inspiring a generation of sourcers, and raising the overall level of our industry. I am fortunate to have had so many friends and mentors who have lit the trail I follow, and have lent to me strong shoulders on which I stand.

Since the summer last year (when we found out Sammy Jo was on her way, I began soul-searching to decide which of three directions I would take. As I did that I also began having conversations with my close friends, business advisors and mentors and asked them for pros and cons on each of my three choices. My choices were:

1.      Continue growing organically and slowly

2.      Merge with an organization that could provide us the infrastructure we needed to grow

3.      Scale back to a more manageable "lifestyle" business that made just enough to live on but would not grow

As I had conversations with my advisors it became painfully clear that Option 1 - organic growth - was potentially disastrous because my small company of five employees was already suffering from diminishing bandwidth and serious growing pains which would only increase. Several of my advisers had taken that option in their own businesses and each of them inevitably crashed and burned out.

Option 3 was scary because I had the desire to continue on the trail and shrinking just did not go along with my goals. That left Option 2 but the few I approached wanted to “buy” me and as many of you know I am just not for sale. When I brought up this topic with Don Ramer he never offered to buy me. In fact, he said “Shally, you don’t need me, and I don’t need you, so if we were to join forces it would be perfect!” which lead to a conversation about our core values and business models. We arrived at the conclusion that our two organizations had a chance of affecting a sea change in the industry if we banded together. That kind of change is something in which we are both deeply passionate. After a couple of visits to each others’ HQ and collaborating on a few joint projects it became obvious that a merger on the level of true partnership and collaboration was the obvious choice.

So here we are today – and I would like to use this blog as a way to have a conversation with my friends out there in Cyberspace who may have questions about what, if anything, this means to them. Please also read our official Press Release: http://jobmachine.net/merger along with John Zappe's scoop on ERE's InsideRecruiting here:

http://www.ere.net/inside-recruiting/news/arbita-and-job-machine-merge-182329.asp then come back and let me know your thoughts on all of this.

Cheers,
Shally

Shally that's exciting news. For you. Your business and the industry. Please ask your partner to "hoist" one from the Canuk.

Shally,

I hope this means that you'll be spending a lot more time in Minneapolis to visit the Arbita office. If so, let's make a point of getting together here.

For many years I have been a big fan of yours.

For the past year I have been very fortunate to build a relationship with Don on a business and personal level.

I am so happy that two people I admire for their character and values will be working together.

I am most happy that what had been two ripples in the same pond will become a wave.

You deserve all the success you are enjoying. You made a good point about the people bandwidth pains of organic growth. I am very glad that, unlike AIRS, you chose to merge with a company that is not an RPO vendor. As a result, I don't see you being accused of any conflicts of interest.

Yes!

Amazing news Shally! As you know, I'm a huge fan. Personally and on behalf of Starwood, I wish you the very best of luck - although I'm certain you don't need it for true success. Look forward to seeing great things from this joint venture!

I am sorry read the thread and probably should not say anything like some of my peer group and just sit back and bite my tongue.

However over the last 3 years watching the walls I have decided to post this here on ERE. I am real surprised on some that would have and is being stated as this is a great move. For what?
I am sorry and maybe lost my way in this space "working a desk accountable for butts in chairs vs. data collection". But I do not see the value here outside more championing..Do not get me wrong both of these professional are top knotch. I just am baffled on value creation in this move.
Also please lets not bash AIRS anymore or anyone who has paved the way ‘us’ to have these privileged roles to support HR and Recruiting. If we really follow the 11 billion that was pumped into this space 99-02 more than half has overlap...so the noise will continue. AIRS has made great contribution on education and training and making sourcing seen as a curriculum for universities. I mean after all the whitepaper for ‘recruiter accelerator’ might want to be revisite before we make such statements.

So from 99-02 we rode a wave and now the wiki world has the next best thing since sliced bread and now it time to say oh sorry you helped make us the brand we are coupled with the companies we have had the blessing to support. In short, get real and stop showcasing each other/ come up with some new stuff and please get back to the mission changing the sourcing world for the better not show casing each other to make money on eye balls, pundits and click backs.

I do not get it. Maybe in Sept I will see the light.
Heading back to my trench to call people for my Intel Client.

Respectfully

Thank you!

Thank you everyone for the overwhelmingly positive response! I am thrilled to be able to continue growing with a company that can provide the infrastructure I need to be able to build a better future for the sourcing industry.

Chris - I believe I have come up with quite a bit of new stuff, and had a very large impact in the sourcing industry, along with a handful of other leaders. The way I see it this merger is going to enable me to continue doing that and take on even bigger projects so I can do just what you ask. Thank you for your sincerity, and I know you will not be dissapointed as we come up with things that make your work easier and our world better.

Congratulations Shally, and a note to Christopher

Shally, well thought out, and well said. As one of the many recruiters/sourcers who has had the opportunity to learn from you (and from AIRS) in the past and one who intends to contribute to your future business growth, I wish you the very best.

Regarding Christopher's note, despite the fact that I usually find these back and forth chastising posts silly in the extreme, this last post by Christopher was too much, so I respond:

Christopher- first, if you need to start a post with the words "I'm sorry", it's best to hit the delete button and go back to "putting butts in chairs", which seems to be your comfort level. Second, you might want to spell check and edit your posts for accuracy before you hit that send button. T paraphrase, better to remain silent and be though a fool than to communicate and confirm it. Editing makes you look a lot smarter and more thoughtful, if that was, in fact, your intent here.

All the best to you Shally.

Margaret

Congratulations and looking forward to great things!

Great news for you Shally! My first reaction was a fear of losing you as a tremendous knowledge-point and mentor. I have learned more from my few sessions with you than with any other leader in our field and from what I just read, that's not going to change. It looks like you're going to have some new resources to keep the engine running and "kick it up a notch". Best wishes to both you and Don, I'm sure you'll be a "smashing success"!

And Margaret, thank you for so eloquently writing what flashed through many a mind when reading CY's response.

Shally,

You said that Don said "...you don’t need me, and I don’t need you, so if we were to join forces it would be perfect!” Now THAT is a wonderful reason to collaborate. I'm serious here. I believe that. Don's comment reminds me of what Tom Peters said in Embracing Chaos: (from my memory) the person you really want to hire is the person who wouldn't work for you if it was the last position available. Unconventional is good! Figure out why you're joining forces and what value you'll add as you go along. Damn the torpedoes! Go ahead!

As Usual Shally is Leading By Example !
