Google Releases Diversity Numbers

by May 28, 2014, 8:44 pm ET

Screen Shot 2014-05-28 at 5.41.04 PMGoogle says it is “time to be candid” about the diversity of its workforce. And with that, it’s out with numbers.

Laszlo Bock, SVP of People Operations, defends the numbers in a blog post (which has some interesting comments on it).

Here’s Block’s blog post.

Here’s a breakdown of the numbers by “tech,” “non-tech,” and “leadership.”

I’m curious if this refers to the company as a whole, or mainly to the Mountainview “Googleplex”.

The gender data is worldwide. The ethnic data is U.S.

Thanks, Todd. Very informative. A frequent Google consultant was discussing this with me today, and she wondered if these figures reflect only FT employees or if contractors are included as well.
If only FT, I’m curious what the contractor force is like…

The comments are interesting by the way. There are quite a few about age – asking if Google will break down its data by age. There are also some comments questioning Google for feeling like it should hire anyone but the best employee in the first place — saying that it should focus on competency and not skin color and ethnicity.
