Great article Carol...really enjoyed it and it is spot on. Your phrase "It's Not About You" hits the mark for me. I consistently see recruiters running their traps and talking all the time - spouting off on how great the company is, how awesome they are, etc.

Recruiting to me is about two things:

1. Listening to what the candidate wants and then giving it to them.
2. Matchmaking.

I consistently receive compliments from candidates on how my recruiters are such great communicators and how they listen to each candidates needs and wants. With this formula, we continue to locate and place the top talent within our industry inside our company.

Carol I couldn't agree more with your thoughts. We always prepare what we are going to say before we engage in various parts of the recruiting process. While there are many reasons for this preparation the most important reason is this: If you are thinking about what you are going to say next ... you are not listening. Keep up the good work.

Well-said, Carol. Another thing recruiters can do is to concentrate on their communication strengths. For example, I'm not particularly good at spontaneous spoken communication, either one-on-one or in groups, but when I'm prepared I'm pretty decent both as a speaker and as a listener; that's also why I like the written word- it gives me more control over my communication.

Cheers,
