In today’s society, where everyone has a smart phone and they are constantly using it, and frequently Googling something, especially job hunters, if you find something promising while you’re in the car or waiting at a bus stop, you now have the ability to apply at that exact moment rather than making a note to apply when you get home. It would make the job hunting process so much easier.

I appreciate the insight this article includes as to the direction Microsoft took with their mobile app. The decision to make the app simple vs. slick seems like the way to go for a mobile recruiting solution.

Paul –interesting point. A simple response would be that both "pull" and "push" activities are vital to the success of a recruiting program. The same distinction I would see when speaking to passive vs. active candidates can be applied to this conversation. In our case, we have a large audience coming to our career site daily and we must optimize that experience to fit their device - otherwise, we might as well waive them "good-bye". Having said this, it is important to reach beyond the candidates already interested in your company and we are looking at a variety of mobile “push” strategies. Since recruiting target audiences are often specific and segmented (by skill, geo, etc.) mobile specific "push" technologies leveraged to target the consumer market (such as general SMS/MMS advertising) are not always applicable or as easy to push out due to privacy issues and lack of audience data. Having said this, there are some really interesting solutions out there. Also, keep in mind that candidates are leveraging mobile at significant rates to access social media sites, e-mail and search so even though “push” activities may not be labeled exclusively as “mobile,” the company can still get mobile traction based on how candidates are accessing these sites.

Interesting, what is the reason behind candidate "pull" activities in this market? I thought most companies were trying to find a way to "push" messges out to the passive candidate market? When do we start asking if social & mobile recruiting is becoming indiscriminate in the way it is harvesting candidates?
