Humorous but not entirely funny. Sad tale of woe for scientists reported in the Washington Post yesterday.

Only 14% of PhDs in biology and life sciences land an academic position within five years (National Science Foundation). U.S. drug firms have slashed 300,000 jobs; just 38% of new PhD chemists weere employed in 2011. Federal research spending across all agencies has stagnated relative to inflation (American Assoc for the Advancement of Science). Moral of the story become a physicist (or physician); only 1-2% unemployment.
