Dr. Sullivan,

I have to admit that I was not a fan of video interviewing until I participated in an interview for an international position (NY and London). Because of travel constraints, it was easier to schedule the interview between the candidate and three managers. All worked out very well and were able to provide a solid use case for future use, chief among the items was the fact that it is more economical to use rather than flying the candidate in to meet the hiring managers.

Best,

I loved the article! Too often I've seen a reluctance on behalf of recruiters to utilize web conference technology. We built Vonei Meeting to be a service that works on any computer, anywhere broadband internet is available, with no software downloads. We thought it was a natural fit for recruiters and candidates, conducting interviews from anywhere, sharing documents such as resume, examples of work, company benefit plans and forms, etc. You have done an excellent job in listing the benefits of using web based tools, and you are right, the cost of the webcam should not be a limiting factor. It sure beats paying $150+/hour to rent a video conferencing room that is location specific. Why not interview from Starbucks? Panera Bread? Your home? Or anywhere else with broadband internet. I can't wait to see Part 2 of your article!

John, those are great points and thanks again for being at the forefront of another positive technology wave in recruiting. Your insights push many of us along. I have used Skype for calls to South America and across the US and phone calls are just not the same any more. Body non-verbals can communicate volumes more than words.

Great observations John and thanks for providing such a comprehensive overview of the benefits for using this technology. A couple of the areas of the market that weren't mentioned but are the most under-utilised areas for video interviewing are (a) within the recruitment consultancies, who see hundreds of candidates a week in each office, often re-interviewing these people time and time again before placing them and (b) in the outplacement market where many outgoing employees feel they are getting little more than the time of day in the current climate and where professionally produced video profiles would go a lot further in helping these people to compete more effectively for roles that are further away from home (which many are being forced to look at).

Great article John! We have been pushing our customers and candidates to do video interviews and we provide it for free lowering costs. Video conferencing tools can allow scheduling across multiple time zones and continents and allow candidates and managers to conduct interviews from home offices, if needed.
