[...] With agencies feeling the crunch, you can hardly check your linkedin and Twitter accounts without coming across another how-to article on surviving the recession. (why the definite article?) While some of the bloggle offers insightful tidbits about ever-evolving job sourcing tools, most seem to stress fairly old-fashioned values. Ere.net, a recruitment networking and information site, is papered with blog posts advising recruiters on how to maintain good reputations with the ever-growing a-list candidate pool with suggestions such as “Be nice”*, “Discuss things openly and honestly”*, and “Once you talk to them, be straightforward and genuine”* [...]

Pat,
Excellent article. Workforce planning solutions include identifying and hiring entry through experienced level talent, recognition and retention. Recruiters must be internal consultants to the organizations they represent. This includes being a true HR business partner, offering talent strategies then delivering on them quickly, educating/supporting managers/leaders, by adding value through a wide range of innovative solutions and certainly being trusted to challenge the status quo. It is through seasoned well trained, honorable recruiters who are doing just this- identifying talent, standing firm on the best talent identified- keeping in mind experienced candidates offer creativity, drive and knowledge for today into the company's future need, we hire the best. You are absolutely dead on that many mature and qualified candidates possess the skills you listed- what I found key was #9 "and finally, they deserve first consideration. While others were sitting around doing marginal work, this group was driving business forward". Thanks Pat!

This was an excellent, common sense article!
I am a third party recruiter in business since 1975. These are tough times for everyone and especially difficult for the mature and accomplished "A" players that have become casualties of this economy. Thank you for reminding recruiters and hiring managers about the value of experience and maturity.

The highlight of your column, for me was the nine reasons these candidates make for excellent hires. I am using them to encourage the "mature and overqualified" candidates in my network. (Crediting you of course)

We Recruiters are getting more calls and requests for assistance these days and we are less and less able to provide direct help. When I can’t offer job opportunities I try to do give whatever encouragement and guidance I can. Thank you for providing such great advice.
