I have also had a number of former colleagues who are recently laid off. It seems that it is affecting top performers in the executive search realm as well as corporate recruiters because their respective businesses are doing poorly.

Here is my advice to anyone looking:
If you can take any AIRS classes, or SHRM classes, etc., now would be a good time. One trend I see is that a lot of major corporations are trying to hire former search consultants to become corporate recruiters, who are able to establish relationships with candidates, hiring managers, and can proactively source candidates. The ideal recruiter now is more or less a human resources consultant. Selling yourself to a company that is spending a lot of money on recruitment agencies (contingency, executive search, etc.) and saying that you can produce ROI by saving them money and sourcing the same talent -- that is the new era, I believe, of recruiting.

Options - it's all about having options.

As a recruiter who came from a tech support background I can relate to his experience. Both jobs use many of the same traits and temperament.

I would only add that he go in with a plan - such as "to be a support desk team leader within two years." With your eyes on the prize decisions become easier.
