Shally: Great headline and even better article content. Setting aside time for sourcing is vital for recruiters and firms of all sizes – whether one person or 100-people. I would only add that keeping all your leads on a call list is a bit inefficient and will cause redundancies with your data management system and all the notes you have to take. Why not pull it directly into your applicant management system right at the beginning. It would be even better if that system allows you to automatically pull the information directly from the Internet source right into the database.

While I'm sure the recruiters who do part-time sourcing will appreciate this post, the fact is that your recommendations are just as appropriate for full-time sourcers. We tend to get heavy sourcing loads and still need to prioritize, block out time w/o distractions, etc. The one thing we may have a greater luxury to do vs. recruiters is your #7 - "Follow interesting links that appear to lead to cool info". A sharp sourcer has good instincts about which of those "interesting" links tend to lead to gold nuggets, and so it's usually (though not always) worth the effort in the end. Some of those interesting links are not candidate-related: Our tools make a difference in our productivity, so we need to keep up on the latest resources that industry buzz and/or respected peers lead us to believe may have an impact. Demoing products may look like a time-waster to an outsider, but when you find something good, it makes you look like that much more of a genius and your output more worthwhile to your organization.

Shally, great blog! When talking about sourcing with in-house recruiters, the number one complaint I hear is that they don't have time. This is a good roadmap for how to get it done. So no more excuses!
