It's a very interesting topic, especially for us over the other side of the pond - in the UK our petrol prices are nearing $10/gallon!!!

I've written a post on the same topic describing how much people will need to earn when considering taking up a new commute. I've even put together a ready reckoner to make it easy to work out!

Leslie- Nice speaking with you a few weeks back. And very nice article except for the short thrift allocated to the concept of command and control.

As discussed, this is IMHO the single greatest hurdle to telecommuting as a ritualistic policy in any company - the strength or lack thereof, of a manager's ability or potential ability to manage people far and wide. With the main thrust of my recruiting experience being in technology companies, the ingrained nature of command and control is something that needs to be dealt with before implementing any telecommuting initiative.

Training programs for managers and employees on how to lead virtually, how to work virtually, and how to integrate work virtually should be primary requirements. Yes, requirements.

Telecommuting is both a recruiting and organizational development issue that needs to be planned for and implemented as one would plan for any M&A project.

As an aside, the price of gas here on Lawn Guyland has created a severe shortage of parking spaces in Huntington where I live. No longer is one guaranteed a parking space if you take the 8:22. So it appears that higher gas prices will force people to rise earlier to get a coveted parking space. And did I mention fewer seats on the train?
