Good article, for years I have only had my teams run 'Hiring Invitationals' rather than the dreaded Open House or Job Fair. The results have been far better because the candidates are truly pre-qualified (typically my team phone screens as part of the review process) and motivated to attend. The quid pro quo for the candidate in our case is that they can walk away from the event with a contingent offer letter in hand.

I have run a variety of invitationals incorporating referrals, web advertising and even print (the only way print seems to work these days). A recent example was a 'bring a bilingual friend' event for a Customer Contact Center in need of Spanish/English fluent employees. The event included presentations by the Contact Center Leader and the head of our Hispanic Banking Initiative plus a tour of the facility. It was great fun and a good success. We even offered the employees bringing candidates the chance to enter a drawing for an i-pod.

This is something I would encourage folks to experiment with, I have used it for Financial Services, Support positions and in a previous position Goverment Contracting. Worked every time!

Great article. I just posted an entry about career fairs and open houses in my blog. I did a section on Invitation Only Open Houses but didn't expound as much. I actually prefer these over public access job fairs and have been pushing them to the companies I contract with for years.

Thanks for writing this piece.
