CareerOneStop.org has a salary tool and occupation word search to help you identify and verify standard job titles, with standard acronyms. There's a thesaurus built from the occupation searches that users enter. These are translated into O*NET so you can see whether or not the job title you developed corresponds to a standard occupation and whether that corresponds to the job you've defined. For example, the result for lion tamer is animal trainer and the result for Oracle DBA is database administrator.

Another benefit: Using more generic job titles and descriptions of skills and experience will help you find candidates from other industries. O*NET descriptions cross all industries. Click the link below the salary chart to learn more about an occupation.

Changes are afoot. Starting July 16th you can go to www.careeronestop.org and click on salary info. Until then go to www.acinet.org and click on Occupation Information.

This is a pet peeve of mine - abbreviations. Many job descriptions I receive for names searches contain them and they work against, rather than towards, efficiency. We all tend to forget lexicon we use daily may sound like Greek to an outsider. Some people are reluctant (shy) about asking what something means. If more of us said what we mean and mean what we say there'd be more communication in the world!
