Thanks for a great article - even though it took me awhile to read it, this is a hot topic for me. I have telecommuted since the 90's so can be regarded as a pioneer, and the technology that supports telework has improved dramatically.

I have yet to add a web-cam to my skype, but my company supports telework w/VOIP, VPN, and various tools that bring us together in VR.

With the rising cost of gas, I think more workers will be asking for telecommute options, at least a few days a week would make a big difference.

Another benefit of working from home not mentioned in the article is about the impact of children gaining a better understanding of their parent's jobs. Telework brings a whole new dimension to "take your daughters to work day" no to mention the added benefit of more flexibility for working parents. There are other social advantages and I'd love to see more comments about this.

Workers who want to telecommute, but would prefer working out of a real office (near where they live), should consider negotiating the use of a Remote Office Center as part of their compensation package. Remote Office Centers lease offices (as well as internet and phone systems) to workers from multiple companies in shared centers. Remote Office Centers can be located anywhere, which is a great benefit to employees. Employers that allow telecommuting and Remote Office Centers have a much larger worker pool to hire from, increasing their competitive advantage.

There is a free web site that lists Remote Office Centers by city: http://www.remoteofficecenters.com

It continues to amaze me as to why more companies do not allow remote workers or telecommuting. You raised some very good and interesting points, with the number one being how much Sun has saved on real estate and CO2 emissions. Great job on this article!
