My company has just gone through a college recruiting initiative, and convinced our client to do remote recruiting and it has proved very effective in time, quantity, quality and cost. On campus visits don't make sense anymore for most schools. We deliberately were targeting '2nd tier' schools as opposed to top tier. John's right. Good company's don't recruit from schools like SF State. And there's plenty of talent at small state schools/commuter schools.

College students definitely fly by the seat of their pants for intake exams and positioning. Don't forget--If you are accepted at a University in the way you are describing--you can always become a recruiter yourself, even while attending school. The best recruiters are the ones with knowledge about recruitment. This means searching out the ideal home town and school for your liking.
