Good article - and something that I a have thought extensively about. As the talent pool dries up companies will have no choice but to more agreesively attack the source, colleges being one.

I have noticed a trend in our startup clients setting up their headquartes on or close to college campuses. And colleges are building office space specifically for this purpose as well as offering Co-op porgrams. Virginia Tech did this - students would work 3 6 month co-ops across various semesters for a total of 18 months. With the Co-op program students and employeers would get a much better feel for one another and did not treat it lightly like some do internships.

After commencing an extremely high-profile internship program; I recognize that the organization of your company's program is one of if not, the MOST important factor when the exceptionally desirable students are out there searching for an internship program of their own.
They want to know, that when they invest their time in a company's internship program, that it's going to look just as great on their resume as their first job will...and if the internship has the probability of turning into a career option for them long term. *Internships are no longer the stereotypical plop me behind a copy machine and hope I can make a darn good cup of coffee.* These are green opportunities for even better opportunities - and a chance at a brighter future for many college graduates.
