While this article contains some very nice ideas on process, it fails to mention the crucial element in 'diversity' (by the way, who is diverse?) recruiting: cultural variance.

I would suggest that the key to recruiting anyone, since we're all diverse to somebody, is to gain an understanding of the candidates culture and hopefully sub-cultures. It is clear this article was written through Western eyes and assumes the 'diverse' candidate can be landed by following 10 easy steps.

Nowhere, however, does the article suggest learning about the candidate's cultural variance. Doe s/he come from a collectivist or individualist society? What is the candidates view on power? How do they use language? You get the idea.

The key to hiring 'diverse' candidates is to A) recognize that variances exist B)learn them and C) take the necessary steps to ensure a mutually-beneficial fit for the candidate and the employer.
